On October 19th, Jarman International team member Laura Pollacco joined a night tour, exploring one of Japan’s most famous industrial zones in Kawasaki City aboard a yakatabune (traditional Japanese leisure boat). This extensive industrial area spans nearly 5 million square kilometers across seven artificial islands, connected by bridges and canals.
The views were rather stunning, the thousands of twinkling and flickering lights were mirrored in the dark waters below us as we glided past buildings and structures of all shapes and sizes.
The Kawasaki Night View of Factories Cruise offers a rare look into one of Japan’s leading industrial centers, just 20 minutes from Tokyo and 8 minutes from Yokohama by train. This tour provides a fascinating glimpse into a vital part of Japan’s industrial history, which has developed extensively over the past 150 years.
It really was a new experience for me to see this side of Japan. I have visited temples, shrines, climbed mountains, and hiked through forests, but to see this side of Japan which keeps its industry–and economy–ticking was unique and beautiful in its own way.
